Nanuet, a name synonymous with suburban tranquility and community spirit today, holds a significant place in the history of Rockland County as a pivotal railway hub. The strategic location of Nanuet, where the original Erie Railroad intersected with the New Jersey & New York Railroad and the New City branch of the New Jersey and New York, cemented its importance in the region’s development and connectivity.
Thanks to the diligent efforts of our Town Historian Larry Kigler and Joe Barbieri from the New City Library, we’re able to shine a spotlight on this fascinating chapter of Nanuet’s history. Their collaboration in bringing these historical narratives to the forefront helps enrich our understanding of the town’s heritage and its role in the broader story of Rockland County and the surrounding areas.
The railway wye in Nanuet served as a crucial juncture, facilitating travel and transport to and from Haverstraw, Suffern, Piermont, New City, and even as far as Jersey City. This network not only boosted local commerce and communication but also played a significant role in shaping the social and economic landscape of the area.
The presence of these railway lines transformed Nanuet into a bustling center of activity, drawing people and resources, and facilitating the growth that would lead to the vibrant community we know today. The legacy of these railroads is still felt, as they laid the groundwork for the development and connectivity of the region.
By commemorating the historical significance of Nanuet’s railroads, we pay homage to the town’s past, recognizing the foresight and hard work of those who contributed to its growth. This reflection on our history not only deepens our appreciation for our community’s roots but also inspires us to continue building on the strong foundation laid by our predecessors.
We extend our gratitude to Larry Kigler and Joe Barbieri for their dedication to preserving and sharing the rich history of Nanuet and Rockland County. Their efforts remind us of the importance of our past in shaping our future, ensuring that the story of Nanuet’s role as a critical transportation hub will not be forgotten.
