NEW CITY, NY – In a heartfelt announcement today, Town of Clarkstown Supervisor George Hoehmann shared the devastating news of the sudden passing of Councilman Mark Woods. At the age of 54, Councilman Woods succumbed to an apparent heart attack.
Councilman Woods was elected to office in November of 2023 to represent Ward 1, which encompasses the Northwest portion of Clarkstown. A decorated retired NYPD Detective and Combat Army Veteran, Woods served in Afghanistan and graduated from The Citadel Military College of South Carolina with a BA in Political Science. His life was marked by an unwavering commitment to serving others, both in his professional and personal endeavors.
In addition to his role in town government, Councilman Woods was a licensed Funeral Director with an AOS in Funeral Service from the American Academy McAllister Institute of Funeral Service. He was actively engaged as the Director of Veteran Peer Services at BRIDGES, a non-profit organization in Rockland County, where he dedicated his efforts to supporting veterans and their families.
Mark Woods resided in New City with his wife Jeanne and their two children, Ray and Maggie. His contributions to the community extended beyond his public service, reflecting his deep commitment to improving the lives of others.
Supervisor Hoehmann expressed the collective grief of the community, stating, “The entire Town of Clarkstown mourns Councilman Woods and offers prayers and deepest sympathies to his wife Jeanne, son Ray, daughter Maggie, his mother, family, and friends.”
In honor of Councilman Woods’ service and legacy, flags at Town Hall, all town buildings, and parks have been ordered to fly at half-staff. Additionally, a small memorial with a condolence book has been set up in the Town Hall Auditorium. The memorial will be accessible to the public during normal business hours starting Monday, May 20th, for those who wish to pay their respects.
