ROCKLAND COUNTY, NY (May 23, 2024) – Rockland Community College (RCC) hosted its 64th Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 20, 2024, at Clover Stadium in Pomona, New York. The ceremony honored the academic achievements of its Spring 2024 graduates as well as those from Summer and Fall 2023. Under a picturesque clear sky, 500 graduates and over 2,000 guests gathered to celebrate the graduates’ accomplishments.
Distinguished guests such as County Executive Ed Day and Congressman Michael Lawler graced the occasion, adding to the event’s significance. They commended the graduates for their hard work and encouraged them to utilize their education to drive positive change in society.
“Standing here today, surrounded by my fellow graduates and our supportive community, I am reminded of the countless hours of dedication, perseverance, and hard work that have brought us to this moment,” said Daniel Ventura Zeas, an RCC ‘24 Humanities: General Studies graduate. “I’d like to thank God for the opportunity to be here, my parents for their sacrifice, and my professors for guiding me every step of the way.”
Dr. Lester Sandres Rápalo, President of Rockland Community College, delivered a dynamic speech, emphasizing that the graduates’ diplomas and certificates are tangible proof of their abilities and readiness for the challenges ahead. “Trust in your capabilities and know that you are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed from your time at Rockland Community College,” remarked Dr. Rápalo. He encouraged the graduates to embrace diversity, confront uncertainty with courage, and never let the fear of failure hinder their pursuit of success.
Dr. Alfredo Medina, Jr., Vice President for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and College Diversity Officer at Bennington College in Vermont, delivered a powerful keynote address. With an extensive background in the not-for-profit and higher education sectors, Dr. Medina delivered an inspiring speech, highlighting equity and anti-racism as crucial elements for institutional growth. His profound insights into diversity, equity, and inclusion resonated deeply with the audience.
“Define and manifest your journey, be kind and empathetic to others because this chaotic world needs more love and humanity than ever before, and lastly, to each and every one of you, don’t forget that you are your ancestors’ wildest dream,” said Dr. Medina.
