Stony Point, NY – In a heartfelt ceremony attended by local officials, firefighters, and community members, the Stony Point Town Board and the Wayne Hose Fire Department honored Stuart L. Gates (Stu) for his extraordinary 80 years of volunteer service in fire services. Summit Avenue, just north of Waye Hose Fire Co #1, has been named “Stu Gates Way”. The ceremony took place on a sunny morning, reflecting the warmth and respect that the community holds for Gates.
The event began with a welcome message from Town Supervisor Jim Monaghan, and acknowledged the many dignitaries in attendance, including County Legislator Doug Jobson, Councilmen Keith Williams and Todd Rose, as well as Emergency Operations Coordinator, Police Chief, Town Justice Bill Franks, Highway Superintendent Karl Javenes and Sheriff Lou Falco.
Kevin F. Armstrong, President of the Wayne Hose Fire Department, continued the ceremony, expressing the collective honor and privilege of recognizing Gates. He highlighted Gates’ numerous leadership roles, including past presidencies in several firefighter associations across Rockland County, the Hudson Valley, New York, and New Jersey. Armstrong noted that Gates’ leadership and dedication have made a significant impact on fire services, not only in Stony Point but throughout the state.
Andrew Smith, a Fire Chaplain for West Point Fire Department and long-time friend of Gates, shared personal anecdotes about their 53-year friendship, emphasizing Gates’ relentless commitment to the community. Smith recalled Gates’ pivotal role in founding the Rockland County Fire Training Center and organizing the participation of Wayne Hose in the 1965 Presidential Parade, the only volunteer fire company to do so.
In his brief and humble speech, Gates expressed his surprise and gratitude for the recognition. He acknowledged the support of his late wife, Elinor – who passed away in 2017 after 58 years of marriage, and thanked the community for allowing him the opportunity to serve. Gates’ words resonated with the audience, reflecting his deep sense of duty and love for the community.
Dignitaries and attendees including Supervisor Monaghan and Sherriff Falco were noted to be holding back tears of joy, in celebration of a man who has devoted his life to selfless service in the local community.
The ceremony concluded with the unveiling of “Stu Gates Way,” a permanent tribute to Gates’ lifetime of service. Kevin Armstrong had the honor of unveiling the sign, which will stand as a testament to Gates’ legacy in the fire safety community.
