Rockland, NY – In a significant legislative victory, New York State Senator Bill Weber has successfully passed Senate Bill S5675, which allows trade unions to make recruiting presentations in high schools across the state. Having secured unanimous support in the Senate, Senator Weber is now collaborating with trade unions to push the bill through the New York State Assembly.
Senate Bill S5675 grants trade unions the ability to present, distribute literature, and engage directly with high school students, provided they are invited by the school’s principal or administration. Previously, trade unions were not permitted to conduct such activities in high schools. This legislation aims to broaden students’ awareness of viable career paths outside of college, highlighting the opportunities that trade unions offer.
“It is important for students to know there are other options out there other than attending a college. Trade unions provide excellent jobs with excellent salaries and benefits,” said Senator Weber.
This legislative achievement is particularly noteworthy given that Senator Weber is a freshman senator, making his success in passing a bill with statewide implications a remarkable feat.
Senator Weber, a strong advocate for labor issues, has already secured endorsements from prominent unions, including the North Atlantic States Regional Council of Carpenters, LiUNA! NY, and the Local 2001 Transportation Union of America, Railroad Division, AFL-CIO. More union endorsements are expected to be announced soon.
