Stony Point, NY – Penguin Rep Theatre, under the artistic leadership of Joe Brancato and executive direction of Andrew M. Horn, proudly presents the world premiere of The Steel Man, a new play by Cary Gitter. The production, which runs from September 6 through September 29, 2024, at Penguin’s repurposed hay barn theatre, marks the closing of the nonprofit’s 46th season.
Set in 1980s Pittsburgh, The Steel Man tells the poignant story of Jake Gellert, an aspiring actor struggling to step out of the shadow of his father, Leo, a larger-than-life Hungarian Jewish immigrant. The play, inspired by a true story, delves into themes of legacy, identity, and the complex dynamics between father and son. In a unique casting twist, Penguin veteran actor Sam Guncler will portray his own father, bringing an added layer of authenticity and emotion to the performance.
Cary Gitter, Penguin Rep’s playwright-in-residence, has an impressive background, with previous works like Gene & Gilda and The Virtuous Life of Joseph Andrews showcased at the theatre. His musical The Sabbath Girl opened Penguin’s 2024 season before enjoying a successful Off-Broadway run. Gitter’s accolades include being a three-time O’Neill semifinalist and a New York Times Critic’s Pick for his one-act play How My Grandparents Fell in Love.
The production features a talented cast, including Guncler as Leo Gellert, Amanda Kristin Nichols as Christine Sommers, and Leighton Samuels as Jake Gellert. The play is directed by Joe Brancato, whose previous credits include The Sabbath Girl and Off-Broadway productions such as Daniel’s Husband and The Devil’s Music: The Life & Blues of Bessie Smith.
The creative team includes set designers Christopher and Justin Swader, costume designer Christian Fleming, lighting designer Ed McCarthy, and original music and sound by Max Silverman. The theatre, a cozy, converted barn dating back to 1880, offers an intimate setting with comfortable seating and modern amenities, making it a perfect venue for experiencing the powerful drama of The Steel Man.
Special events during the run include a reception after the opening performance on September 8, a tasting from Big Daddy’s Home Plate BBQ on September 14, and a discussion following the September 20 performance.
Tickets are priced at $49, with early ordering discounts available until August 31. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit Penguin Rep Theatre’s website or call 845-786-2873.
