Sparkill, NY — St. Thomas Aquinas College is partnering with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) for an upcoming environmental restoration effort as part of the Trees for Tribs Program.
On Wednesday, October 9, volunteers will gather to plant 290 trees and shrubs along the Sparkill Creek tributary, which runs behind the College’s Fitzpatrick Village. The initiative aims to stabilize streambanks, improve water quality, and create healthier wildlife habitats in the local ecosystem.
The event will bring together members of the St. Thomas Aquinas College community, including students from Dr. Bianca Wentzell’s Ecology class, the Sparkill Creek Watershed Alliance, and local residents. This collaboration underscores the College’s commitment to environmental stewardship and hands-on learning opportunities.
Dr. Bianca Wentzell, Dean of the School of STEM at St. Thomas Aquinas College, emphasized the significance of this initiative, saying, “This project exemplifies the collaborative spirit between our college, local organizations, and the wider community, as we take proactive steps to protect and enhance our environment. The Trees for Tribs Program not only enriches our students’ understanding of ecological restoration but also leaves a lasting impact on our local ecosystem.”
The event is open to all members of the college and the local community. Participants will work to plant native species along the creek, contributing to a broader conservation effort that has been instrumental in restoring tributaries across New York State. Volunteers are encouraged to sign up via the college’s website and will be provided with necessary supplies, including gloves and shovels.
