Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rockland County is once again opening its arms to the community, seeking dedicated volunteers to become mentors for local youth. Since its founding in 1984, the organization has served as a beacon of guidance and friendship for young people across the county, fostering life-changing one-on-one relationships.
With just four hours a month, a volunteer mentor – or “Big” – can change the trajectory of a young life. These mentors meet with their “Littles” in the community, engaging in everyday, meaningful activities like taking walks in the park, visiting museums, enjoying music, or simply sharing heartfelt conversations. Each pair designs a schedule and chooses activities that reflect their mutual interests, encouraging organic and impactful connections.
Mentorship through Big Brothers Big Sisters is more than an act of kindness – it’s a proven method of improving young lives. Studies show that youth who have mentors are more likely to excel academically, build strong relationships, and avoid negative behaviors like substance abuse. A landmark national study even confirmed the effectiveness of these relationships, reinforcing the long-standing mission of the organization.
The program is currently seeking volunteers who reside in Rockland year-round, have a vehicle, a valid driver’s license, and car insurance in their name. Whether meeting on weekends or during evenings, mentors provide consistent, compassionate support that helps young people navigate life’s challenges.
“#ItTakesLittleToBeBig” is more than a slogan – it’s a call to action for anyone who wants to make a difference. Those interested can learn more by visiting www.bbbsofrc.com/volunteer or calling 845-317-6112.
