Stony Point, NY — The North Rockland community is mourning the loss of beloved local author and inspirational speaker, Billy Keenan, who passed away early Wednesday morning, August 21, 2024. He was 57 years old.
Billy Keenan was known not just for his powerful story of resilience but also for his unyielding spirit, which touched countless lives. After a devastating surfing accident in 2013 at the Jersey Shore left him paralyzed, Billy’s life took a dramatic turn. He was rendered quadriplegic, and hospitalized for months before being released to home care. Instead of succumbing to the overwhelming challenges that lay ahead, he chose to embark on a path of faith, hope, and perseverance, which he documented in his bestselling memoir, The Road to Resilience.
Keenan, a U.S. Army veteran, former teacher and Irish musician, dedicated his life post-injury to inspiring others, turning his personal trials into a source of strength for many. He often spoke about his journey to packed auditoriums of high schools and universities, sharing a message of hope and resilience with audiences across the east coast of the United States. His impact was felt far beyond Rockland, as his story resonated with people from all walks of life, demonstrating that even in the face of unimaginable adversity, one can find purpose and hope.
His passing has prompted an outpouring of condolences from the community and beyond. County Executive Ed Day, among others, expressed deep sorrow at the loss of a man who had become a symbol of strength and inspiration. “Billy Keenan’s legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched. His story was one of perseverance, and his message was clear—never give up, no matter the odds.”
Keenan’s brother, John Keenan, shared a heartfelt message following Billy’s passing, saying, “Though we are brokenhearted, we take comfort knowing that he is joyfully reunited with our parents, Jim and Eileen Keenan. Billy will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved him. His kindness to all before and after he was injured endeared him to so many.” Billy’s brother James thanked the local communities for the overwhelming outpour of love and compassion for the man.
Privately, his family members noted that the paralysis that Billy endured remained a consistent and heartbreaking challenge. “Imagine having an itch, and not being able to scratch it yourself. If nobody else is around, you just have to endure the discomfort.” James related. “That’s just a very, very small example of the everyday indignities most of us can easily manage. For Billy, he had no choice but to endure them. But he did – everyday, with all the grace God could give a man.”
Billy cited the late Stephen McDonald – who was shot and paralyzed in the line of duty in 1986, as a source of inspiration. Keenan had spoken via phone with McDonald several years after his 2013 accident, which in part motivated Keenan to pursue a career as an inspirational speaker. The COVID-19 pandemic wouldn’t slow down Billy either, as he stayed busy putting the finishing touches on his autobiography The Road to Resilience, as well as refocus on personal nutrition. Up until earlier this year, Keenan was a frequent guest on numerous podcasts, and a consistent inspirational presence on social media groups such as Facebook.
Prior to his passing, he was in the process of authoring his second book, “Iron Man”.
Billy’s remarkable life was a testament to his indomitable spirit, something that was echoed in the words of community member Thomas McGuire: “Heaven has gained a great soldier, teacher, author, and Irish musician. You showed us the road to resilience, Billy.”
Keenan is survived by his sons, Patrick and Kieran, the latter who was able to be by his father’s side during his final moments, along with Billy’s brother James. John Keenan remarked that the close bond between Billy and Kieran was one of the greatest legacies Billy left behind, saying, “The outstanding man Kieran has become is Billy’s greatest legacy.”
Funeral arrangements have been made to honor Billy Keenan’s life and contributions to the community. A wake will be held on Monday, August 26, from 4 to 9 PM at St. Francis Church in West Nyack, NY. A Funeral Mass will follow on Tuesday, August 27, at 10 AM.
As the community prepares to say goodbye to one of its most cherished members, Billy Keenan’s story of resilience will continue to inspire those who knew him and those who have yet to discover his powerful message. Billy’s niece Christine wrote on her Facebook memorial post, “Rest in peace and paradise angel, you’re finally free.”
