Rockland County, NY – Assemblyman Patrick Carroll has called on New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli to conduct a full fiscal audit of the East Ramapo Central School District following conflicting reports about the district’s financial surplus. The call for action comes amid confusion over whether the district’s surplus stands at $30 million or as high as $90 million.
The uncertainty surrounding the school district’s finances arose after recent news reports suggested a significant discrepancy in the surplus estimates. Earlier this year, reports indicated a $30 million surplus, but new estimates suggest the figure could be as much as $90 million.
“News reports emerged this week that the East Ramapo School District’s surplus could be $90 million, months after we learned the district had a surplus of $30 million. Which is it, $30 million or $90 million?” Carroll said. “Based on these recent accounts, this is not five dollars found in a coat pocket. Taxpayers deserve accountability and answers.”
The East Ramapo Central School District has been under scrutiny in recent years for financial management and educational quality concerns. The district, which serves both public and private school students, has faced challenges balancing resources between the public school population and the needs of the large private school community.
Carroll emphasized the need for transparency and fiscal responsibility, urging Comptroller DiNapoli to initiate a comprehensive audit to clarify the district’s financial status. A state audit could help provide a clear understanding of how funds are being managed and ensure taxpayer dollars are being used effectively to support public education.
The potential audit would assess the district’s financial records, examine budgetary practices, and verify whether the surplus is being utilized to enhance educational services, maintain school facilities, and meet the needs of all students in the district.
As the situation develops, Rockland County residents and stakeholders in the East Ramapo Central School District will be closely watching for any actions taken by the Comptroller’s Office. The findings of an audit could play a critical role in shaping future financial management and educational priorities within the district.
