Haverstraw, NY – A step toward reducing gun violence and enhancing community safety was taken this past Saturday as 94 firearms were turned in during a Gun Buyback Event hosted by the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office in collaboration with the Town of Haverstraw Police Department.
Held at the Village Hall in Haverstraw, the event saw a wide array of firearms voluntarily surrendered by members of the community, including 65 handguns, 8 assault rifles, and 21 rifles and shotguns. The initiative is part of the District Attorney’s ongoing efforts to promote public safety and reduce the prevalence of firearms in the community.
The event was attended by several local leaders, including Haverstraw Town Supervisor Howard Phillips, Village of Haverstraw Mayor Michael Kohut, Deputy Mayor Gil Carlevaro, Rockland County Legislator Jay Hood, and Town of Haverstraw Police Chief John Gould.
Walsh said, “It was a great success. I am very pleased with the number of guns collected this weekend at our gun buyback event in Haverstraw. Every one of the guns collected on Saturday is a step in the right direction to reduce gun violence and ensure the safety of our citizens. A sincere thank you to Chief John Gould and the Town of Haverstraw Police Department for partnering with my office in this endeavor, and thank you to all who participated in the event.”
The initiative offered local residents the opportunity to anonymously turn in unwanted firearms in exchange for gift cards, with no questions asked. The event is part of broader efforts to address gun violence, promote responsible firearm ownership, and create safer communities in Rockland County.
“We hope that by providing a safe, anonymous way for people to dispose of unwanted firearms, we can reduce the potential for violence in our community,” said Walsh.
The success of Saturday’s gun buyback event marks another milestone in the ongoing efforts by local authorities to combat gun violence and ensure the safety of residents in Rockland County. The community’s participation demonstrates a shared commitment to public safety and a proactive approach to addressing gun-related issues.
This event is a part of continued collaboration between local law enforcement and the District Attorney’s office to keep the community safe, and the success of the buyback is expected to inspire future initiatives focused on gun violence prevention.
