The Workforce Development Institute (WDI) has announced expanded eligibility and increased financial support for its Child Care Scholarship Program, aiming to assist working families in covering the substantial costs of child care. With child care expenses for two children averaging over $30,000 annually, WDI’s program offers meaningful relief to middle-income families in New York.
Families that qualify receive an average monthly scholarship of $1,000 per child for full-time care, paid directly to New York State-certified providers. The updated program now includes broader income eligibility guidelines, with more than 80% of applicants passing the initial prescreen for assistance. The initiative ensures that families earning within middle-income ranges can access affordable child care while supporting their career or educational pursuits.
To qualify, parents or guardians must be employed or enrolled in an education or training program for a minimum of 10 hours per week. The revised income eligibility range accommodates family sizes from two to six members, with specific limits set for both minimum and maximum qualifying incomes.
For families who fall below the scholarship’s minimum income threshold, WDI advises exploring additional assistance options through local county social services.
Applications for the scholarship, which covers the period from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, can be found at wdiny.org/childcare, or families may contact WDI directly at 518-540-1810 or via email at scholarship@wdiny.org for further information.
