Ramapo, NY — Supervisor Michael Specht and the Town of Ramapo Board proudly hosted a flag-raising ceremony to honor the Ramapo Munsee Lenape Tribe, a community whose legacy is deeply embedded in the town’s history and culture. The event celebrated National Native American Heritage Month with vibrant cultural performances, including Indian flute melodies, rhythmic drumming, and traditional dance.
The ceremony paid homage to the tribe’s contributions and significance, as the town and the hamlet of Monsey both derive their names from the Munsee Lenape people. The tribe’s flag will fly at Town Hall through the end of November in recognition of their enduring heritage.
Supervisor Specht was joined by Chief Dwayne Perry of the Munsee Lenape Tribe for the commemoration. “This event is a heartfelt tribute to the rich history and culture of the Munsee Lenape people, whose legacy continues to shape our community,” said Specht.
The event highlighted the importance of preserving and celebrating the cultural roots that define Ramapo, fostering greater awareness and appreciation for the Munsee Lenape’s vibrant traditions.
