Haverstraw, NY – A 47-year-old Haverstraw man, Elmer Oviedo-Sandoval, has been convicted of felony sexual abuse following a nearly two-week jury trial in Rockland County Court. The trial, presided over by Judge Anne B. Bianchi, concluded with Oviedo-Sandoval being found guilty of Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child in the Second Degree, a Class D Felony.
The conviction stems from incidents occurring between 2016 and 2019, during which Oviedo-Sandoval sexually abused a young girl beginning when she was just nine years old. The abuse occurred in two separate residences within the Town of Ramapo and included inappropriate touching over and under the victim’s clothing. The victim, now 16 years old, bravely disclosed the abuse to her mother in 2023, leading to an investigation by the Ramapo Police Department and the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office Special Victims Unit.
District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II praised the verdict, stating, “The conviction of the defendant reflects the commitment of my office to seek justice for victims. This verdict sends a clear message that those who commit sexual abuse against minors will be held accountable.”
Following the conviction, Oviedo-Sandoval was remanded to the Rockland County Jail, where he awaits sentencing scheduled for October 15, 2024. He faces up to seven years in state prison and will be required to register as a sex offender.
The case was prosecuted by Supervising Assistant District Attorney Gerard M. Damiani III and Assistant District Attorney Kaitlin DeLuca.
