County Executive Ed Day and Director Susan Branam of the Rockland County Veterans Service Agency recently led a special ceremony at the Rockland County Fire Training Center on Wednesday, February 14, to recognize three outstanding local veterans.
Army Veterans James Epps and Grady Anderson, Jr., were presented with the prestigious 2024 Buffalo Soldiers Award. The “Buffalo Soldier” title pays homage to the African American cavalry regiments of the U.S. Army who served in the western United States from 1867 to 1896, renowned for their bravery and discipline. This annual award acknowledges exceptional African American veterans residing in Rockland County.
County Executive Ed Day commended the awardees, stating, “There’s no question, the freedoms we enjoy today would not be possible without the men and women who make the brave choice to serve our nation, including these local heroes, and it is my pleasure to recognize their courage.”
James Epps, who served as a machine gunner in Germany from 1953 to 1956, continues to serve his community by delivering meals to senior citizens through the Prince Hall Freemasonry Tappan Zee Lodge No. 79, of which he has been a member since 1975.
Grady Anderson, Jr., served overseas in Germany from 1959 to 1963 before returning to Spring Valley. In addition to a fulfilling career as an x-ray technician, he has been actively involved in various veteran organizations and community service initiatives for decades.
WWII & Korean War Veteran George Crouch was also honored with an Unsung Hero Award by the Buffalo Soldiers of Rockland County for his dedication and service.
County Executive Day expressed gratitude to the honorees for their bravery and ongoing commitment to the community, acknowledging their contributions alongside other esteemed African American veterans previously recognized by the Rockland County Buffalo Soldiers.
Additionally, Veterans Service Agency Director Susan Branam and County Executive Ed Day were bestowed with Honorary Memberships to the Buffalo Soldiers of Rockland County in recognition of their unwavering support for veterans and soldiers, past and present.
