The Rockland County Industrial Development Agency (Rockland IDA), in a significant collaboration with Rockland Community College (RCC), has announced a new initiative designed to support local students and stimulate economic growth within the county. The initiative will provide $15,000 in internship stipends to RCC students, fostering hands-on experience in key industries and contributing to Rockland County’s economic development.
Dr. Lester Sandres Rápalo, President of Rockland Community College, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing its role in enriching students’ academic and professional journeys. “This partnership with Rockland IDA is a testament to our commitment to equip students with practical skills and opportunities, helping them transition seamlessly from academic settings to meaningful careers,” he stated.
Each stipend, amounting to $2,500, will be awarded to two students across three semesters—Fall, Spring, and Summer—thereby supporting six students annually. This financial support aims to alleviate the burdens associated with unpaid internships, making it more feasible for students to engage with local businesses and industries without financial stress.
The initiative is part of “Skill Up Rockland,” a strategic effort by RCC to align educational outcomes with the needs of local employers, ensuring that students graduate with the skills demanded by the current job market. Steven Porath, Executive Director of the Rockland County Industrial Development Agency, highlighted the mutual benefits of this partnership, noting, “Investing in the education and training of our local workforce is crucial for sustaining economic vitality and community prosperity.”
Interested students will be required to undergo a comprehensive selection process, which includes an assessment of financial need and an essay demonstrating how the internship aligns with their career objectives. Selected students will not intern directly with the IDA but will be placed in relevant local businesses through RCC’s Career Services, guaranteeing a valuable and relevant work experience.
For more details about the internship opportunities or to apply, students and interested parties are encouraged to contact Rachel Mead, Dean for Career and Workforce Innovation at RCC. This strategic partnership not only underscores the commitment of both institutions to foster a robust local workforce but also highlights their dedication to the broader economic and professional development of Rockland County’s future leaders.
