Congressman Mike Lawler announced Monday that a proposed measure concerning local cooperation with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was removed from the Rockland County Legislature agenda following public opposition.
The proposal, introduced by Legislator Beth Davidson, sought to establish guidelines that would limit the extent to which county agencies could assist ICE in certain enforcement actions. Supporters of the measure said it was intended to clarify the role of local government and protect immigrant communities. Opponents argued it would reduce cooperation with federal authorities and negatively impact public safety.
In a statement issued after the agenda change, Lawler said the decision to withdraw the proposal reflected concerns expressed by residents and local officials.
“Common sense won,” Lawler said. “This is a victory for public safety and for every family that wants their community protected.”
Lawler credited community members, law enforcement representatives, and a coalition of elected officials from both parties for voicing opposition to the measure.
“Rockland County stood up and said no,” Lawler said. “It would have tied the hands of local law enforcement and made our communities less safe.”
The draft legislation had been scheduled for discussion at the February 3 meeting of the County Legislature, but was removed before formal debate. County officials have indicated that the topic may be revisited at a later date after further review.
No revised timeline for reconsideration of the proposal has been announced.
