Clarkstown, NY – The Town of Clarkstown is deeply saddened to announce the sudden passing of Councilman Mark Woods at the age of 54 due to an apparent heart attack. Councilman Woods, a decorated retired NYPD Detective and Combat Army Veteran who served in Afghanistan, was elected last November to represent Ward 1.
Councilman Woods was a distinguished public servant dedicated to the welfare of his community. A graduate of The Citadel, he committed his life to service from a young age. In addition to his role in the town government, he was the Director of The Joseph P. Dwyer Veteran Peer Services at Bridges, a non-profit organization in Rockland County.
Supervisor George Hoehmann expressed the town’s collective grief and extended heartfelt condolences to Councilman Woods’ family. “The entire Town of Clarkstown mourns Councilman Woods and offers prayers and deepest sympathies to his wife Jeanne, son Ray, daughter Maggie, his mother, family, and friends,” he said.
In honor of Councilman Woods, flags at Town Hall, all Town buildings, and parks have been ordered to fly at half-staff. A small memorial with a condolence book has been set up in the Town Hall Auditorium for those who wish to pay their respects. The memorial will be open during normal business hours starting Monday, May 20th.
Service arrangements will be announced next week. The family has requested privacy during this difficult time, and all inquiries should be directed to the Town of Clarkstown Supervisor’s Office.
Councilman Mark Woods will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his country and community. His legacy of service and dedication will continue to inspire those who knew him.
