New City, NY โ Teachers and students across Rockland County recently participated in the 12th Annual March Forward initiative, held from February 29 to March 15, 2024. Organized by the Rockland County School Health and Wellness Coalition, March Forward aims to raise awareness among educators and students about the importance of physical activity for learning readiness and personal well-being.
The program promotes the benefits of incorporating physical activity into the school day, including stress reduction, improved memory, enhanced learning readiness, and fostering a sense of connection among students and teachers. Studies have shown that physical activity in schools helps prevent feelings of depression and loneliness, fostering a positive learning environment.
During the two-week period, teachers were encouraged to integrate short physical activity breaks into their lessons or use exercise videos for students to follow along. Physical activity was also used as a teaching tool to reinforce math and language arts concepts.
This year, school districts utilized social media platforms, using the hashtag #MarchForwardRC, to share photos and videos of their activities, inspiring others to join in. According to Carrie Steindorff, Rockland County Department of Health School Health Coordinator, physical activity throughout the school day has been proven to enhance student and staff well-being and academic outcomes.
Dawn Whelan, a second-grade teacher at Thiells Elementary School, highlighted the benefits of incorporating physical activity into the classroom. She emphasized how physical movements linked with concepts aid in memorization and engagement, leaving students more alert and ready to learn.
Educators interested in integrating physical activity into their classrooms year-round can find resources, articles, and videos on the March Forward webpage. For more information, contact Carrie Steindorff at 845-364-2360 or steindoc@co.rockland.ny.us.
