Peekskill, NY – New York State Senator Pete Harckham announced today that armed forces veterans who served in the Korean or Vietnam wars can now apply for New York State medals that recognize their service.
“Armed forces members who took part in the Korean and Vietnam wars were very often forgotten or disrespected when they returned home,” Harckham said. “The commemorative medals are a way to honor and support these brave and dedicated individuals, who sacrificed so much for our freedoms. They are not forgotten.”
Veterans who served in Korea between June 27, 1950, and January 31, 1955, are eligible for a commemorative medal. Vietnam war veterans who served between November 1, 1955, and May 17, 1975, are eligible.
The medals are issued by the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs. Veterans and their families may visit New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs for more information and to apply.
This initiative serves as a meaningful recognition of the sacrifices and contributions made by veterans who served in these significant conflicts, ensuring they receive the honor and respect they deserve.
