Kaser, NY – A 26-year-old Monsey man, identified as Jacob Silberstein, was arrested on Thursday, November 28, 2024, for obstructing firefighting operations and other charges during a fire incident in Kaser. Silberstein, a member of the uncertified fire brigade Matzelei Aish, faces allegations of interfering with the response to a structure fire on Kaser Terrace, which occurred on Wednesday, November 27, around 11:40 a.m.
According to the Ramapo Police Department, the Monsey Fire Department was dispatched to the fire, but Silberstein also arrived on the scene and improperly opened a fire hydrant. This action caused water to fill a supply line that had not been connected to the fire engine, potentially delaying firefighting operations and risking injury to firefighters or further structural damage.
Silberstein was charged with the following misdemeanors:
- Reckless Endangerment
- Obstructing Governmental Administration
He was processed and released, pending a future court appearance.
Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Fire and Emergency Services Director Chris Kear issued a joint statement addressing the incident:
“While the County deeply admires and supports those who choose to be firefighters, it is critical that this rogue fire company stops encouraging residents to call them directly instead of 911, knowing full well they lack the proper training to fight fires effectively.”
The Ramapo Police Department is urging residents to call 911 immediately in the event of an emergency, including fires. Properly trained and certified personnel must respond to ensure the safety of residents, firefighters, and property.
