St. Thomas Aquinas College Celebrated the Class of 2020 In-Person at New York Boulders Stadium

(SPARKILL, N.Y. — July 20, 2021— St. Thomas Aquinas College (STAC) was finally able to honor the Class of 2020 in-person at the Palisades Credit Union Park on Friday, July 16, 2021. The Class of 2020 was previously celebrated virtually at the 63rd Commencement Exercises last year because of social distancing and safety-based protocols brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Friday, July 16, 2021, the Class of 2020 came together to celebrate their collegiate achievements and formally walk across the stage — in-person! — at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona, NY, the home of the New York Boulders and the STAC Spartans Men’s Baseball team. The excitement was palpable as students, along with hundreds of their guests, fellow alumni, and members of the STAC community attended this special occasion. Over 300 graduates from the Class of 2020 earned their master’s, bachelor’s, and associate’s degrees. Students who completed the Honors Program of Study and Aquinas Leaders Program were also officially recognized at the ceremony for their admirable accomplishments.

Besides commemorating the 2020 Class, the STAC Community honored Mr. Frank Squeo, Founder of Baking Memories 4 Kids, as the College’s President, Kenneth D. Daly, and Chairman, Peter Skae, bestowed upon Mr. Squeo an Honorary Doctor of Public Service degree.

Frank Squeo addressed the Class of 2020 and shared two tips and one wish: “Plan diligently in your life; set goals and achieve them. Always give it your best, and that will guarantee success. The wish I have is that, like myself, you all find your destiny in life. I planned everything but God had a different plan. I had advanced stage three cancer and from that I found my destiny was to start this amazing foundation helping sick children.”

President Daly shared kind words with members of the Class of 2020, “Just two months after we recognized the Class of 2021 — my first ever graduating class — we were delighted to finally be able to bring back the Class of 2020 and to bestow upon them the honor that they so rightly deserved, yet so patiently awaited. We will always remember them for not just waiting the longest, but for being the strongest, and for setting the example of resilience for many graduating classes to come.”

Valedictorian, Aliza Curray Deen, addressed her fellow Class of 2020 graduates and imparted words of wisdom as they continue their career journeys post-graduation. Aliza also reflected on the ceremony and how important it was to her: “My time at STAC has helped me grow as an individual and also build some of the closest relationships I have today. It was so wonderful to see the Class of 2020 again, and I feel like I’ve finally graduated!”Congratulations again to the St. Thomas Aquinas College Class of 2020! The STAC community is thankful to the College’s dedicated faculty, staff, students, friends, and all who came together to celebrate our graduates.

Metro-North Railroad Announces Resumption of Ferry Service

Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon Ferries to Resume Service Beginning August 30, Connecting with Morning and Afternoon Peak Trains

Ferry Resumption to Coincide With Train Service Increase to 83% of Pre-Pandemic Levels Just Before Labor Day

MTA Metro-North Railroad President Catherine Rinaldi today announced the Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon ferry services will resume on Monday, August 30. The changes will coincide with Metro-North’s upcoming service increase, to take effect with the August 29 timetables, which will increase train service to 83% of pre-pandemic levels.

“We are so excited to see the region continue to recover, and our weekday ridership has increased steadily all spring and into the summer,” President Rinaldi said. “Our late August service increase will provide even more travel options for people ready to return to the office after Labor Day. Restoring ferry service during weekday peak periods will give our Rockland and Orange County customers returning to work additional options for getting to and from the City and other destinations along Metro-North’s Hudson Line.”

“People are coming back to work and NY Waterway ferries are here to give them a safe, fast and convenient commute. We’re thrilled to restart the Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon service with Metro-North, and we look forward seeing all our past riders, and many more new ones, back aboard in August,” said Armand Pohan, CEO, President and Chairman of NY Waterway

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, Metro-North implemented its Essential Service Plan and discontinued service on both ferries.  Now, as the region continues to recover and the railroad prepares for a post-Labor Day return of office workers and school, ferry service will resume and connect with morning and afternoon peak trains at Beacon and Ossining.

Schedules for the Haverstraw-Ossining and Newburgh-Beacon ferries will be made available in early August.

The upcoming Aug. 29 service increase follows up on service increases reflected in Metro-North’s April 12 and June 21 timetables. The April 12 timetables saw the restoration of weekend service to Wassaic and the reopening of the Manitou station, located near Bear Mountain Bridge and Anthony’s Nose. The June 21 timetables added 24 new peak trains on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven Lines, bringing the railroad to 67% of its pre-pandemic service levels.

CALLING ALL COLLEGE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS: DO YOUR PART TO HELP PREVENT THE SPREAD OF COVID-19

Get your vaccine to help keep your college campus and community safe

NEW CITY, NY, – Rockland County Executive Ed Day and County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert urge college and graduate students to get fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before the school year begins.

Upcoming COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics at the Rockland County Department of Health:

  • 3 – 7 PM, Wednesday, July 21 – Pfizer Vaccine – Ages 12+ with Parent or Guardian
  • 1 – 4 PM, Thursday, July 22 – Moderna Vaccine – Ages 18+

Visit http://rcklnd.us/covid19 to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment at the Rockland County Department of Health. Walk-ins at vaccine clinics are welcome and will be registered on-site.

Vaccines are the best way to keep college students from getting and spreading the virus that causes COVID-19. Until an individual is fully vaccinated, they should wear a well-fitting mask over their mouth and nose indoors and stay 6 feet from others to slow the spread of COVID-19. Check with your college institution for vaccination requirements and COVID-19 protocols.

Parents can help students get fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before they return to campus. While preparing for back-to-school and college, it is also a perfect time to ensure eligible students are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Both SUNY and CUNY schools and many more private colleges require students to get vaccinated for all in-person classes beginning with the fall 2021 semester. The COVID-19 vaccines are effective against the variants of concern, such as the Delta variant. Those who are unvaccinated have the greatest risk of becoming seriously ill.

“With these new infectious variants circulating, we see more young people getting sick and hospitalized with COVID-19. Getting the vaccine is the most important thing you can do to protect yourself, your friends and family, your college campus, and your community. Take the opportunity now to prepare for a successful and healthy return to school,” said Rockland County Health Commissioner Dr. Patricia Schnabel Ruppert.

Anyone age 12 and older can visit http://rcklnd.us/covid19 to schedule a COVID-19 vaccine appointment at the Rockland County Department of Health. Walk-ins at vaccine clinics are welcome and will be registered on-site. Any 12–17-year-old receiving the vaccine must arrive with a parent or guardian who will sign a consent form. The parent or guardian must show some form of personal identification, such as a driver’s license.

If you have health insurance, please bring your benefit card with you. The vaccine is free; however, the health department can collect an administrative fee from insurance plans. All are welcome regardless of immigration status.

The vaccines offered at the Rockland County Department of Health clinics are the Pfizer-BioNTech (ages 12+) and Moderna (ages 18+) vaccines. Both use mRNA technology which continues to prove to be safe and effective. These vaccines are an essential public health tool that protects people from getting sick or severely ill with COVID-19 and may also help those around you.

The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine requires you to get a second dose 21 days/3 weeks after your first dose. The Moderna vaccine requires you to get a second dose 28 days/4 weeks after your first dose. You will be given an appointment for your second dose, or you may go anywhere the same vaccine you received is offered.

Visit the New York State Am I Eligible webpage or Vaccines.gov to find a vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson/Janssen) near you. For questions, more information, or if you need assistance scheduling a COVID-19 vaccine appointment, call 845-238-1956 from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday – Friday (except holidays).
