A bill was passed in Congress last week that would rename a local post office after man familiar to most WRCR listeners and many Rocklanders. Rockland Congressman Mondaire Jones announced the passage of his bill to rename the Suffern post office on Chestnut Street after the Jerry Donnellan. Jones cited Donnellan’s service as an Army Sergeant in Vietnam, where he was ambushed and wounded by a grenade, and his three Purple Hearts as just a fraction of the reasons he deserved the honor…
Jones noted that Donnellan helped create the Camp Shanks Museum in Orangetown, established the Rockland County Buffalo Soldiers Award to recognize the contributions of Black veterans, in 1987 he launched the tradition of the Memorial Day Watchfires, and he launched the Rockland County Public Service Medal to honor those who served in Afghanistan and Iraq. He died on March 23rd, 2018 at the age of 71. The bill must be passed by the Senate and then signed by the president before it’s enacted. It currently sits in the Senate’s Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.
