A car plunged into the icy Hudson River off the Piermont Pier yesterday afternoon, but police have been unable to locate the car or the driver. Piermont Police say surveillance footage shows a person driving a car down Ferry Road to the pier around two yesterday afternoon. Police also found tire marks in the snow. The driver gets out of the car, as it continues to roll into the river off the pier. The dock was damaged in the process, parts of the vehicle were found nearby. The investigation by Piermont Police and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office is on-going. If you have any information, contact the Piermont Police Detective Unit at 845-359-0240.
Spring Valley Gets Prison On COVID Relief Fund FraudA Spring Valley man got a year and one day behind bars after pleading guilty to defrauding the Small Business Administration of more than $1.6 million in COVID relief funds. US Attorney Damian Williams says 34-year-old Elizier Scher took money intended for small businesses pandemic relief from the Economic Injury Disaster Loan program. Williams says Scher used the money to buy real estate and pay off credit cards. He’ll also serve two years of supervised release and he has to pay over $1 million.
West Nyack Man Gets 15 Years for 202 Fatal StabbingA West Nyack man will spend the next 15 years in prison after pleading guilty last November to fatally stabbing a Greenwood Lake man in June of 2022. Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh says 65 year-old Joseph Janulewicz was sentenced yesterday in Rockland County Court on one count of first degree manslaughter. 55 year-old Brian Romney’s family declared him missing. Walsh says Romney’s car was found about a week later near Janulewicz’s home. New York State Police found Romney’s body there under a tarp in a storage room. He had multiple stab wounds, his death ruled a homicide. The prison term also comes with five years post-release supervision.
