The embattled head of the Nyack Union Free School District is out of a job. In a statement posted on its website Friday, the Nyack’s Board of Education said they and Superintendent Susan Yom have mutually agreed to part ways. Yom started in the position in March just last year. Nyack’s assistant superintendent of curriculum and instruction, Lizzette Ruiz-Giovinazzi, was named as acting superintendent. In the statement, Yom said she was filled with “immense gratitude for the journey” and “achieved great milestones for learning and growth while advancing literacy for all.” Yom had come under fire from various unions in the district during negotiations back in March.
Suffern Man Accused of Making Threats Online Against New Square, Kiryas Joel Communities
A Suffern man was arrested Friday and charged with Making a Terroristic Threat stemming from social media posts allegedly targeting the Village of New Square community. MonseyScoop.com reported the man’s social media post included a map of New Square and Kiryas Joel with the words “ZIONISTS LIVE HERE” and referenced weapons. Ramapo Police say they worked with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Rockland County Sheriff’s Intelligence Center to find and apprehend the unidentified 44 year-old suspect. He was arraigned Friday and released on his own recognizance.
Queens Woman Arrested After Bust at Haverstraw Spa
A Haverstraw spa has been closed and a Queens woman was arrested Thursday and after police found an illicit prostitution operation at the location. That’s according to the Journal News. 55 year-old Lan Xu reportedly solicited an undercover investigator for sexual acts and performed a massage without a professional massage therapy license at Oceart Spa on Route 9W in Haverstraw. Xu was charged with unauthorized practice of a profession and prostitution. She was released on an appearance ticket by the Village of Haverstraw Justice Court.
O&R Continues to Bring Power Back Following Storms
It’s been a rough week or so for the local power company, heavy storms have taken out power lines all over its coverage area. Orange and Rockland Utilities says yesterday’s powerful winds and quick rainstorms knocked out power to 3,200 customers in all. As of 6:30 last night about 255 remained in the dark. After a break in the rainstorms today and tomorrow we could see another round of storms return on Wednesday.
