A state appeals panel yesterday tossed a lower court ruling that cited election fraud to remove two Republican candidates for Clarkstown supervisor. That’s according to the Journal News. Clarkstown Justice Scott Ugell and Rockland’s GOP chairman Lawrence Garvey can be on the June 27 primary ballot, though Ugell had declined the ballot spot before the court case was filed. The ruling determined there wasn’t enough evidence to prove fraud had been committed.
NY Thruway to Host Public Hearing on Proposed Toll HikesThe New York State Thruway Authority needs more money to maintain its crumbling infrastructure, but before they can raise tolls on the Tappan Zee Bridge and elsewhere, they’ll be holding a public hearing next week, the only one scheduled in Rockland. Thruway officials late last year approved a plan that would raise the New York EZ-Pass toll on the Tappan Zee 50 cents a year for four years, up from the current $5.75 to $7.75 in 2027. If you have an out-of-state EZ-Pass tag, or if you pay by mail, you’d be charged $13.56. The meeting is being held Tuesday from 4–7pm at Palisades Center in West Nyack on the fourth floor in the Adler Community Room.
VP to be West Point Commencement SpeakerThis year’s commencement speaker at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point on May 27th will be Vice-President Kamala Harris. It’s the first time ever that a woman is featured as the commencement speaker and it’ll be Harris’ first visit to the academy.
Katonah Resident to Run for Congress in 2024The sister of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Katonah resident Liz Gereghty, has thrown her hat into the ring to run for Congress in the 17th District. That seat is currently held by Republican Congressman Mike Lawler. Gereghty, a Democrat, made the announcement on social media earlier this week. She said threats to women’s rights and rising costs prompted her to enter the 2024 Congressional race. Lawler defeated Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney last November.
Woman Dies While in Custody in Orange County JailAn unidentified woman being held at the Orange County Jail died of unknown causes while in custody there over the weekend. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office said an autopsy will be conducted on the 40-year-old woman to determine the cause of death. The state attorney general’s office is investigating. No additional information was available.
