PIERMONT, NY – Workers at a construction site on S. Piermont Ave in Piermont, adjacent to the Post Office, uncovered a significant environmental issue over the weekend.
The site, which had previously been home to a gas station, was found to be contaminated with oil. During the demolition process, an oil spill was discovered, leading to oil being drained into the nearby creek via hoses.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) was alerted and is currently on site alongside hazmat teams and the local fire department. Efforts are underway to contain the spill, but the creek remains slick with oil. The DEC will continue its investigation and response tomorrow.
Alexis Starke, a local resident, reported that the site had a concrete slab placed over the former gas station, which was removed by the current construction crew, revealing the oil contamination. “The DEC will be back tomorrow,” Starke said, indicating that the issue has been ongoing for several days.
Concerns have been raised about the safety and regulatory oversight of construction activities in the area. Residents noted the presence of numerous construction dumpsters and ongoing projects, highlighting a need for stringent safety measures and proper guidelines.
The spill has potential ecological impacts, posing a threat to local wildlife, including water birds, fish, frogs, and plant life in the creek. Residents on the Preserve Piermont Facebook Group are calling for accountability and questioning the role of local officials in overseeing such projects to prevent future environmental hazards.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
