As Daylight Saving Time approaches on Sunday, March 10, residents of Rockland County are urged to not only adjust their clocks but also take the opportunity to ensure their emergency preparedness.
One essential task during this time is to review and update your emergency supply kit. Check for any missing items and inspect the kit for any expired, leaking, or damaged items. If you don’t have an emergency supply kit yet, now is the perfect time to assemble one. Include a several-day supply of food and water for each person, along with ready-to-eat items like canned meats, fruits, and vegetables. Don’t forget about your pets—ensure they have their food and water supplies as well. Additionally, your kit should contain essentials such as flashlights, a hand-operated can opener, a radio, batteries, and copies of important documents.
Eric Medina, Director of Emergency Preparedness/Public Health, emphasizes the importance of keeping supplies up-to-date and stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Daylight Saving Time also serves as a reminder to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Follow guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for maintaining these devices:
- Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are effective for up to 10 years. Replace the entire alarm if it emits a low-battery warning chirp.
- Smoke alarms with other battery types need a new battery at least once a year. Replace the battery immediately if the alarm signals a low-battery warning.
- When replacing batteries, adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions and use the specified battery brand and model.
Residents in need of assistance with battery changes and alarm replacements can contact the Rockland County Department of Health’s Healthy Neighborhoods Program.
