Rockland County, NY – Rockland Community College (RCC) student Noel Nyamewya was awarded the top speaker honor at Dominican University’s debate tournament held on Sunday, October 27. RCC and Dominican University fielded six pairs of debaters each, competing for both individual and team trophies based on win-loss records and speaker points.
“It was an excellent showing,” said Professor Andrew Jacobs, Director of Forensics at RCC. “Noel led the way for RCC, and most of our debaters – who were all first-time debaters – took home awards.”
Dominican University’s team of Amy Amaya and Loren Hernandez won the tournament, securing a 2-1 win-loss record. The RCC team of Nyamewya and Akemi Liz closely followed, tying Dominican’s record but finishing second based on speaker points. RCC’s Edgar Guerra Lemus and Nika Obiamalu placed third, with Obiamalu also earning a fourth-place individual speaker award. Christine Williams of RCC took home the third-place individual speaker trophy.
RCC’s Deneil Watson and Christine Williams rounded out the competition with a fourth-place team finish, capping a strong overall showing for the RCC debaters. The next tournament will be held at RCC on November 17.
