ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. — Rockland Community College (RCC) is currently hosting its fourth annual “Unity in Community: Rising as One” Festival, a vibrant celebration designed to showcase and enhance the spirit of cooperation and shared enthusiasm that characterizes the RCC community. The festival, which began on April 22 and will run through May 7, encompasses a series of events that emphasize the power of collective effort and creativity.
Professor Patricia Maloney-Titland, a central figure in the festival’s creation and a champion of the community’s artistic spirit, shared her thoughts on the festival’s impact. “The overwhelming support and enthusiasm from our RCC community have been pivotal,” said Maloney-Titland. “It’s through the organizing committee’s dedication that we’ve turned our vision into reality, fostering inspiring connections and a profound sense of belonging among participants.”
The “Unity in Community” initiative began in 2021, conceived by Professor Maloney-Titland. It has since grown into a significant event that not only brings together faculty and students but also engages them in sharing empowering personal and collective stories. This year’s lineup includes theatrical performances, food festivals, and discussions on historical events, all designed to highlight RCC’s creative talents and collaborative ethos.
Dr. Lester Rápalo, President of RCC, expressed his enthusiasm for the festival’s role in reinforcing the campus’s culture of collaboration and compassion. “This event truly embodies the spirit that defines our community. We are excited to showcase the creativity and talent that enhance our college experience and strengthen our community bonds,” he remarked.
The festival kicked off in Rockland County with a fundraiser event on April 20, 2024, at Kendra Scott Outlet Store-Woodbury Commons, supporting RCC’s Visual and Performing Arts department and student scholarships. The on-campus festivities began on April 22 with an Earth Day celebration that included announcing winners of the Earth Day Art and Writing Contest and featured performances from the Contemporary Music Ensemble.
A notable event, the “I am Bilingual/Trilingual/Multilingual!” panel discussion, is scheduled for May 7. It will feature ESL and international students sharing their experiences in adapting to academic life in the U.S. as non-native speakers, highlighting the resilience and positive attitudes required to overcome various challenges.
Most events are free and open to the public, providing a wonderful opportunity for community members to engage with the college’s vibrant cultural offerings. For more details on the festival’s full schedule, visit RCC’s Unity in Community webpage.
