New City, NY – February is American Heart Month, and the Rockland County Department of Health is reminding residents of the many health benefits of walking. Whether indoors or outdoors, walking is a simple yet effective way to boost overall well-being, particularly heart health.
Research from the American Heart Association highlights that walking briskly for at least 150 minutes per week can lead to numerous health benefits. Regular walking can improve brain function, boost mood, and enhance sleep quality. It also helps lower the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and some cancers. Additional benefits include better blood pressure and cholesterol levels, increased energy, stronger bones, and even a reduced risk of dementia and osteoporosis.
For those worried about finding time for exercise, short walking sessions throughout the week can add up to the recommended 150 minutes. Winter weather doesn’t have to be a barrier—malls, grocery stores, and large department stores provide great indoor walking spaces. Even walking around the house or doing household chores can contribute to an active lifestyle.
Pedestrian safety is also a priority. When walking on roadways, it’s important to follow New York State traffic laws to stay safe:
- Use sidewalks whenever possible; if walking on the road, face oncoming traffic.
- Wear bright or reflective clothing to ensure visibility.
- Carry a flashlight or wear reflective gear when walking at night.
- Stay alert and avoid distractions, such as texting, while walking.
- Be cautious of vehicles backing out of driveways.
- Cross streets at corners or designated crosswalks and always check for traffic before crossing.
The Rockland County Department of Health is partnering with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee to promote pedestrian safety. Businesses, community agencies, and faith-based organizations can schedule a free 45-minute interactive presentation on traffic safety by calling (845) 364-2500. More information on road safety can also be found on the Rockland County Safe Streets website.
This American Heart Month, take steps—literally—toward a healthier heart and a safer community by making walking a daily habit.
