ORANGETOWN, NY – In a heartfelt display of community support, Habitat for Humanity of Rockland County and the Marine Corps League teamed up to construct a temporary ramp for Richard Porr, a 95-year-old World War II veteran from West Nyack. Over two days, volunteers dedicated their time and effort to ensure Porr could safely and comfortably access his home.
“I just want to say thank you to all the people that helped me and everybody who came,” Porr expressed with gratitude.
The ramp marks a critical improvement for Porr, who has faced increasing mobility challenges in recent years. The nonagenarian, who served in the Navy at just 17 years old, worked as an engineer aboard the USS McCaffery, a destroyer stationed in the Pacific during the war. In addition to his military service, Porr is a colon cancer survivor, embodying resilience and determination.
Jenna Mega, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Rockland County, emphasized the importance of initiatives like these. “We do a ‘Brush with Kindness,’ which helps people stay aging in place,” Mega explained. “This ramp will help him stay in his home with his daughter. We love the fact that we are able to serve the people who served us.”
The project reflects Habitat for Humanity of Rockland County’s broader mission: partnering with volunteers and local families to provide safe, affordable housing and maintain stability for those in need. The organization’s commitment to veterans and aging residents underscores its dedication to fostering a community of support and care.
Porr’s story is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation and the importance of giving back to those who have served. Thanks to the collaborative effort of Habitat for Humanity and the Marine Corps League, Porr can now navigate his home with greater ease and dignity.
