Peekskill, NY — State Senator Pete Harckham has officially confirmed that he will seek re-election in 2026, ending speculation about his political future. The four-term senator issued a statement on Wednesday asserting his commitment to continue serving New York’s 40th Senate District.
“To quell any speculation about my future plans, I will be running for re-election to the State Senate next year,” Harckham stated. “Simply, the challenges ahead are too great for me to walk away from this important responsibility, and I look forward to a meaningful political discussion next year.”
Harckham was first elected to the New York State Senate in 2018 and has since secured re-election in 2020, 2022, and 2024. He currently represents a diverse district that includes four towns in Putnam County, one town in Rockland County, the city of Peekskill, and the towns and villages of northern Westchester County.
Known for his advocacy on environmental policy, addiction recovery, and infrastructure investment, Harckham has maintained a visible presence throughout his district. His early announcement sets the stage for what may become a competitive campaign season, as issues such as public health, affordability, and energy reform continue to dominate state-level political discourse.
As the 2026 election cycle begins to take shape, Harckham’s declaration signals stability for constituents who have seen him hold office through a period marked by both pandemic recovery and shifting economic priorities.
