In Spring Valley, New York, Kevin Castillo, aged 22, has been sentenced to 7.5 years in state prison with 5 years of post-release supervision following his conviction for Assault in the 1st Degree under Penal Law § 120.10 (1), which is classified as a “B” Felony. This announcement was made by Rockland County District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II.
On March 24, 2023, at around 3:06 am, officers from the Spring Valley Police Department responded to a residence in Spring Valley, NY, in response to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, they encountered a female victim who had sustained a gunshot wound to her right forearm. The victim stated that prior to being shot, the defendant had been on a fire escape ladder outside the residence, and when she went to open a window to tell him to leave, he began shooting at her with a handgun, ultimately striking her in the arm. The defendant then fled from the property.
First responders swiftly transported the victim to Westchester Medical Center, where she underwent successful emergency surgery. Multiple law enforcement agencies collaborated in the investigation and quickly located and arrested the defendant approximately an hour and a half after the shooting.
District Attorney Thomas E. Walsh II emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of Rockland County residents and reiterated the commitment of his office to work with federal, state, and local law enforcement partners to remove illegal firearms from the streets. He commended the thorough investigation carried out by law enforcement agencies and their prompt apprehension of the defendant, who will now face the consequences of his actions.
The case was investigated by the Spring Valley Police Department, with support from the Rockland County District Attorney’s Office, Rockland County Sheriff’s Office, Ramapo Police Department, and Clarkstown Police Department. The prosecution was led by Executive Assistant District Attorney Michael Dugandzic and Supervising Assistant District Attorney Nicole Garcia.
