Suffern, N.Y. — The Suffern High School boys hockey team added another chapter to one of New York’s strongest recent runs on Sunday, defeating Canton 5-2 in the NYSPHSAA Division I state championship game and completing a three-year title streak. The victory gave the Mounties their third consecutive state championship and their fourth Division I state title in the last five years.
An interview with the team, and/or the coaching staff will be posted shortly by our Rockland News sports correspondent, Tom Brady.
Suffern entered the weekend already carrying the weight of a championship standard. The program returned to the state final after defeating Pittsford 5-3 in the Division I semifinal on Saturday, while Canton advanced by beating West Genesee in its semifinal to set up Sunday’s title game.
The championship win further cemented Suffern’s standing as one of the premier boys hockey programs in New York State. According to the NYSPHSAA’s championship preview, Suffern had already won the Division I title in 2025, which marked the program’s third title in four years before this weekend’s result pushed that total even higher. Sunday’s win over Canton now makes it three straight championships for the Mounties.
Among the players helping lead Suffern’s latest title run was senior Sean Tyrrell, whose offensive reputation has made him one of the team’s most recognized scoring threats. Tyrrell drew added attention entering the final after scoring five goals in Suffern’s semifinal win over Pittsford, a performance that helped send the Mounties back to the state championship game.
For Canton, the championship appearance still marked a notable postseason run. The Golden Bears reached the final after an overtime semifinal victory and earned the chance to compete for the state title against one of the state’s most established programs.
Sunday’s result gave Suffern yet another state trophy and extended a remarkable era for the program. In a sport where repeating is difficult and even returning to the championship stage is never guaranteed, the Mounties have now turned sustained excellence into expectation.
With three straight state titles and four championships in five seasons, Suffern’s latest win over Canton added another milestone to a run that will be remembered as one of the best in recent state boys hockey history.
