STONY POINT, NY – James Keenan, owner of KSI Safety & Self Defense, has introduced a new element to his decades-long career in Security and Safety: CPR Training. He recently held a CPR class at Fiesta Acupulco, and has begun a new blog newsletter: The Tactical Citizen.
Mr. Keenan is a long-time resident of the Town of Stony Point, and has over 25 years of experience in law enforcement, security and consulting. He has conducted training classes – most recently a series of group boxing classes in Town at a local training facility, to demonstrate and teach techniques for self defense. He also provides private security services for several high-net worth clients.
The following is an excerpt from Jim’s recent blog newsletter, The Tactical Citizen.
It Can Happen at Any Time – Don’t Freeze! Spring into Action.
According to statistics, 70% of “Pre-hospital” CPR is administered in a residence. What does this mean for us? Well, it means if we are ever in a situation where someone needs CPR, that may be a person we know or even a loved one – God forbid! That is reason enough to learn CPR, at least in my book.
Let me tell you a quick story.
The scene was a busy Saturday evening at a northern NJ Steakhouse. I was alerted by my wife that a situation was occurring behind her that was out of my line of sight at first. When I stood from our table I saw a lady lying on the floor and another giving CPR compressions.
I knelt opposite the aid giver and introduced myself, stating I knew CPR and was ready to help when she needed me. She was Barbara, a nurse, and I never got any other personal info. Thank the heavens after around 22 CPR compressions were given, the victim became responsive and CPR was stopped.
We were informed by her shaken husband that this had happened before due to a medical condition. I, along with the nurse and the one and only waiter who helped, stood by and offered comforting words and a jacket to rest her head until EMS arrived. Response time was 13 minutes – seemed like a lifetime.
The story ended well, she was going to be okay, but here are a few takeaways.
The 80 or so other folks eating dinner backed away, stared or looked around aimlessly, or just froze in place….Bystander Effect. You see, for the most part, these folks are not coming from a bad place. It’s not always the case that they are unconcerned or don’t want to help. Perhaps they are reluctant to get involved for fear that they may do more harm. The “Bystander effect” is when people wait for someone else to spring into action. Maybe a Doctor, a Nurse, Paramedic or someone trained is present at this moment who can do better than me? But what if there isn’t?
Don’t be afraid to help. Call – Nine One One. Make sure there is a clear path for responders. Assist caregivers if they ask (get a first aid kit, etc.). Help in some small way, any way you can. Don’t be a bystander – be an asset. Don’t possess the skills? Go get some! Go get some skills! It’s not too difficult and you will feel empowered and secure!
