Opening Comes with Some Traffic Restrictions
By Cesar A. – Reporter
Thiells, NY – The long-awaited roundabout at the bustling intersection of Suffern Lane, Hammond Road, and Letchworth Village Road is officially open for vehicular traffic—well, mostly. While North Rockland residents can finally test their skills in navigating the circular wonder, ongoing construction and temporary traffic patterns are keeping things a little spicier than anticipated.
Today, at approximately 3:56 pm (and 47 seconds), the Haverstraw Police Department announced the opening of the roundabout, adjacent to Hammond Road, North Rockland High School, Letchworth Village Road, Suffern Lane…and most importantly – people’s undivided attention for the past 4 months.

As the Thiells roundabout takes its tentative first steps, here’s what you need to know:
The Town of Haverstraw today revealed the following detailed points of detail, for residents to further critique on the North Rockland Community Facebook Group:
- All Thiells Mt Ivy Road traffic will turn right onto Suffern Lane and enter the roundabout, even for those planning to head westbound on Letchworth Village Road towards Ridge Road.
- No left turns onto Thiells Mt Ivy Road from Suffern Lane are permitted. Westbound it is! Vehicles must take Ridge Road to eventually reach Thiells Mt Ivy Road.
- Right turns onto Thiells Mt Ivy Road from Letchworth Village Road are, however, allowed—some small comfort, perhaps.
Despite the partial opening, the consensus on social media has been anything but partial. From skeptics to satirists, the roundabout has already sparked a range of commentary:
For Vanessa, who has experienced roundabout life in Indiana, the secret to embracing it is all in the adjustment: “At first I was scared to approach these when we moved 2 years ago, but now I see it makes so much sense and keeps things moving. Once you adjust to this, you will all love it.”
Rocky Alexander provided the following Rock Report: “The wheels on the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round… the wipers on the bus go… back to you in the studio!”
Justin said, “I just completed my first roundabout. It’s like a rite of passage.”
Arduous Testing by Large Vehicles, and Golfers
Large apparatuses, commonly known as “firetrucks”, courtesy of the Thiells Fire Department, tested out the newly minted road on Monday November 18th. Here are the results of that test:
Incidentally, several golfers were also seen hiking back and forth from Rotella Golf Course to Patriot Hills, indicating that they were looking forward to using this new fangled road configuration – a circle – to bridge the divides that separate us in North Rockland.
