New City, NY – A Westchester County man has been charged months after a deadly crash on the New York State Thruway in Clarkstown that killed a Rockland County father of two, according to New York State Police.
Police said William Peralta, 25, of Elmsford, was arrested Wednesday, March 11, in connection with the Aug. 11, 2025, crash that claimed the life of Steven Redner, 47, of Tallman. Authorities announced the arrest on Thursday, April 2.
The crash happened at about 12:40 a.m. on the northbound Thruway just north of Exit 12. Investigators said Redner’s vehicle was disabled and partially in the travel lane when it was struck from behind by a 2014 Ford driven by Peralta. The impact sent both vehicles spinning across multiple lanes. Redner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following what police described as a lengthy investigation, authorities determined that Peralta had been speeding and was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Police said his blood alcohol concentration was 0.12 percent, above the legal limit. Peralta has been charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, second-degree manslaughter for recklessly causing death, and driving while intoxicated. He was also issued multiple traffic tickets.
He was arraigned in Clarkstown Town Court and released on his own recognizance. He is scheduled to return to court on May 21 at 9:30 a.m.
Redner was remembered by loved ones as a devoted husband, father and community member. A Suffern native and 1996 graduate of Suffern High School, he was described by family as a “beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle, and friend” whose life “brought light and joy to everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.” Known for his kindness and willingness to help others, Redner was involved with organizations including the Rotary Club and the Elks Club. His family said the legacy he leaves behind is one of “kindness, dedication, and love.”
He is survived by his wife, Kitty; daughters Paige and Riley; son-in-law, Rylan; mother, Janet; siblings Karen and Paul; and other extended family members.
A GoFundMe page created for Redner’s family after his death raised nearly $38,000. In a tribute posted on the page, the organizer wrote that Redner was “raised to be respectful, hardworking, and loyal,” and remembered him for his sharp wit, compassion and ability to ease difficult situations.
“We miss you terribly, Steve,” the tribute reads. “We will carry you in our hearts and in our actions, until our last grains fall.”
