Helen Hayes Hospital’s aquatic therapy pool is specifically designed for rehabilitation and low-impact exercise, benefiting individuals recovering from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions. The warm water, maintained at 92-94°F, allows participants to move more freely with reduced pain and strain—an advantage for those managing:
- Arthritis

- Back pain
- Neurological conditions
The facility is designed for universal accessibility, featuring:
- Hydraulic lifts
- Bilateral railings
- Flat-floor design with variable depths
These features ensure that individuals of all abilities can participate safely and comfortably.
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald emphasized the far-reaching benefits of aquatic therapy:
“Aquatic programs improve mental health, cardiovascular health, and muscle development and provide pain relief that can help reduce stress. The reopening of Helen Hayes’ therapy pool will give the community more access to programs that enhance both physical and mental well-being,” he said.
Helen Hayes Hospital’s Acting CEO Yvonne Evans highlighted the importance of the pool for the community, stating:
She said, “the reopening of our pool is a highly anticipated moment for our hospital and the community we serve. Our aquatic programs have long supported mobility improvement, stress relief, and overall health enhancement. We are excited to once again provide this valuable resource.”
