Rockland County’s Warming Center is operated by Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland, in partnership with the Rockland County Department of Social Services and is open now through April. The Center has space for up to 75 homeless single adults at the Dr. Robert L. Yeager Health Center in Pomona. The Center remains open each night regardless of the temperature and remains open during the day when the temperature is 32 degrees or below.
Last April a staff member from the Warming Center was asked to transport one participant to her new residence in Orangeburg. When they arrived, they were both thrilled at how nice it was. The staff member commented that she could see the joy on the resident’s face when she received the keys. The woman invited the staff member in to see the apartment and offered to have her back for a meal. The staff member also noted that the woman thanked her for helping her to change her life for both her and her son and thanked her for always treating her with respect.
“This Warming Center will continue to help our most vulnerable residents in Rockland remain warm and safe,” said County Executive Day. “I am immensely proud of this effort and our partnership with Catholic Charities. Guests are offered a warm place to rest, showers, and laundry services with staff available to assist with benefits and referrals.”
While the Warming Center is funded by Rockland County, additional services are provided year-round to those in need by Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland based in Haverstraw. The services include a food pantry with fresh produce, rent and eviction support as well as other basic necessities of life. One hundred percent of donations go directly to help individuals in need. Donations can be made by visiting the website at www.ccrockland.org and clicking the “donate now” link in the upper right-hand corner or by texting CCROCKLAND TO 21000 and following the prompts.
